Situated in a quiet neighborhood in Frankfurt Nied, the residential buildings, which were built in the 1980s, have an idiosyncratic architectural language. Separated by a street, the 4 buildings are divided into 2 ensembles, each with a central courtyard that serves the development. After 40 years, the ensembles are to be upgraded by an exterior modernization, both in terms of energy and design. The special features of the complex facade with its striking color scheme, the recesses and the post-modern design elements require a design plan for this.

The focus of the concept was to find an economical solution for the energy upgrade that is both sustainable as well as attractive and upgrading. In addition, the aim was to intervene as little as possible in the substance of the existing building in order to enable the tenants to continue to live their daily lives.

The concept provides for the installation of an insulation system. The first floor is set off in a contemporary manner by clinker brick slips. The windows are framed by a fascia, with the upper two floors presenting themselves as a design element. It was important to emphasize the vertical to counteract the massiveness of the elongated facade. A textured render complements the visual separation of the combined elements.The entrance areas are also given a new look. A wall panel with an integrated mailbox system is added to the prominent canopies, creating a path-guiding entrance box. The impression is reinforced by the "cut-out" materiality.The balconies and loggias were also included in the concept. The loggias are also to be offset to match the color of the textured plaster. The railing also fits homogeneously into the appearance of the facade.

The concept aims to calm the overall image and give the buildings a new contemporary identity and quality.
